Leavenworth, first city of Kansas, was incorporated on June 13, 1854, just two weeks after Kansas Territory was declared open for settlement. We continue our series about Leavenworth with a discussion about the early newspapers of Kansas, the establishment of Leavenworth, and the debate about what to name the town.
