History Video Blog #8

In the ancient world, there were two great colonizing powers. The Greeks and the Phoenicians. Both of these peoples were successful civilizations made up of city-states that lived in Mediterranean lands of limited resources. When population grew, colonization was encouraged. Over several centuries in the ancient world, the Greeks established colonies all around the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. Their chief competitors were the Phoenicians, the people who lived on the coast of the Levant, especially in what is today Lebanon.

Just like every American college has an alma mater song, so every city-state in the ancient world had what we call an origin myth, or something that makes sense out of why the city was founded and what its purpose in the world is.

What follows is a Phoenician origin myth. Let’s see what we learn about the particular city and its awesome queen, named Dido.

Kirk Douglas is so tough he doesn’t read books, he just stares them down until he gets the information he wants out of them.
If paper beats rock, rock beats scissors, and scissors beats paper, what beats all 3 at the same time? Answer: Kirk Douglas.
    Could this be a trend?

My favorite movie of ancient history is The Kingdom of Heaven because 1) It has some great fighting and battle scenes. I love the scene where the knight takes the rock and bashes the helmet of his well protected opponent. It shows how your strength (lots of armor) can become your weakness. Also, the way the Knight felled the siege towers is really cool. 2) It shows how the Templars fell out of favor with the pope and were persecuted. I’ve often been intrigued by the Templars and this movie is the first I’ve seen of them being cast as players in the plot.

Hmmm. . . favorite movie about the ancient world. I’d have to go with Ben Hur. Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd. Although Jean Simmons stands out in my memory. I think the scene I’m thinking of is from “The Robe,” but it’s been years since I’ve seen it. I’m thinking I need to see more films about the ancient world. :-)

Welcome to the blog. Though the Templars are not technically ancient history they seem to provide no end of fascination, and not just to conspiracy theorists! Dr. Martin Luther also fell out of favor with the medieval papacy, perhaps with happier results?
