Cat-a-fan: Do you have a sudden craving for lutefisk (cod filet soaked in lye, dried in the sun, washed, and rehydrated in time for Christmas dinner)? If not, you probably do not have Viking forebears. On second thought, You DO have Viking ancestors, based on your (real) Norman name. So what do you do when you have those cravings for lutefisk?

So that is where the Russians came from.
That makes sense. WOndering where I really came from? Was there a Viking in my background?
Or how about a Chief?

The question. I like revolutionary history but dont have cable. So the best I get is PBS.
And the video blog by Liam Atchison. :)

Ah, the History Channel. What entertainment! (Although I tend to take it as 90% fiction.) :-) I'll get sucked into any program that takes place before 1880. Just like literature, I'm not a fan of that modern stuff. 20th Century. . .yuck.

Does "rus" have any connection to the country of Belarus, then?

Yes, the History Channel should never ever be used as a means for concrete information. I call it 'hollywood history:' the writers and producers of the shows, even though they have hired researchers, tend to use the old cut-and-paste method of piecing history together to make it excitingly screen-worthy. They turn unknown items or opinions into concrete facts.

Even so, there are sometimes some awesome shows on, and a lot of the time, they have their info correct. My personal favorite is anything pertaining to good ol' honest Abe, the Civil War, the Great Depression, Industrial Revolution and the old American west. There's something so haunting and mesmerizing about the American west... perhaps because it is our very own not-so-distant past! :) I love comparing how people thought then to how they think now. Basically, if there is ever a show aired on HC that dates from between 1800-1935 and is set in the U.S., I'm totally there.

Oh, and one more thing - NO, More should not have been deemed a Saint. That's just silly :p
