Sorry, Liam. I can’t give up the smiley face! I just can’t. It’s what separates casual, conversational writing from more formal writing for me. Since I wish we could be having these conversations face-to-face — I wish you could see my smile. Since you can’t, it goes on the page! (Of course, if it violates some deep conviction of yours that would throw up a barrier to our friendship, I’ll try to refrain. But it won’t be easy!) Recently a ku student used this three-letter curse while posting an comment I refused to publish on this blog. I penalized him 6 billion points and sentenced him to two courses: one in freshman composition and another in informal logic. I required him to take freshman comp at a different school, one that actually taught composition.
